THE CHALLENGES

Eni | GenAI for Sustainable Development

Today, more than ever, digital is a lever for creating value, aimed at making Eni’s business increasingly integrated, efficient and sustainable. Computing power, data and artificial intelligence support the energy transition strategy by accelerating the process of research, development and production. Digital transformation is crucial to ensure competitiveness and long-term sustainable growth by achieving strategic objectives.

Eni’s mission is inspired by the United Nations 2030 Agenda, launched in September 2015, when more than 150 leaders from around the world met to contribute to global development, promote human wellbeing and protect the environment. It is an action programme that incorporates the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which cover all areas of social, economic and environmental development, considered in an integrated and organic way.

The challenge

Is Generative Artificial Intelligence, or GenAI, a threat or an opportunity/stimulus to broaden the horizons of our skills and abilities?
GenAI is certainly one of the most surprising and at the same time most controversial innovations in the field of Artificial Intelligence. This technology has the ability to create synthetic data in various contexts and to support humans in their activities.

Therefore, exploiting the potential of GenAI means opening up to different possibilities, exploring new frontiers and overcoming limits. We use GenAI as a source of inspiration to develop innovative ideas, to create new products and services and to tackle complex challenges.

The goal of the “GenAI for Sustainable Development” challenge is to develop ideas based on Generative Artificial Intelligence (such as apps or software/hardware solutions), in line with at least one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Development areas

  • Technological innovation: new approaches and tools, paving the way for more efficient and effective solutions.
  • Involvement and participation: Actively involve people and communities.

AlmavivA | Innovative Digital Solutions to Enhance Lesser-known National Heritage

In the era of absolute digitalization, AlmavivA has been accompanying the country’s digital transformation for years as a fundamental process to create a more innovative and competitive productive context. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) itself allocates 42 billion euros to this very objective, more than 20% of the total funds, promoting activities to support digital transition aimed at digitizing businesses and public administrations, with the idea that such investment can lead to better services for the entire community.

However, in this process, the community itself is still too little involved, as in the case of promoting and preserving national artistic heritage. While the Colosseum, the Arena of Verona, or the Archaeological Park of Pompeii are so attractive that they hardly require promotional activities, other lesser-known cultural assets lack the same visibility. The reasons are varied – among these, for example, unfavourable location or a lack of personnel to engage in the protection of the exceptional vastness of Italian artistic heritage – and often result in insufficient investments leading to deterioration and abandonment. We are talking about works that are often extremely important both for their historical and cultural value and for what they represent for the places and communities where they are located.

The challenge

The challenge that AlmavivA presents is to develop digital solutions aimed at preserving and enhancing this artistic heritage, involving both Italian citizens and tourists. Think, for example, of solutions that incorporate new technologies such as Blockchain, Web 3.0, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Innovation comes from imagination, experimentation, looking beyond… and from the integration of multiple technological categories. The challenge is on!

Airbus Italia Challenge | AI for Space Application

Artificial intelligence currently boasts numerous fields of application and contributes to important applications and areas of research, such as smart data processing, natural language processing, autonomous vehicles and robots. The space sector is a field in which artificial intelligence has recently been receiving significant attention. The increasing diffusion of constellations of small or very small satellites in LEO (Low Earth Orbit), which often have limited communication capabilities, is pushing for a greater use of these techniques on board with the intention of helping to overcome these limitations. This allows the satellite to process and analyse data locally, rather than constantly transmitting it to Earth for processing. This not only saves on data transmission costs, but also allows the satellite to make faster decisions based on the data collected.
One of the fields in which artificial intelligence is most used is Earth Observation, in which, for example, images of non-optimal quality (those containing clouds) are discarded directly on board, guaranteeing a saving of bandwidth and time.

The challenge

Propose a possible application of the use of artificial intelligence on board small satellites or drones highlighting their merits, the proposed AI technology and related critical issues with particular attention to the benefits obtainable in terms of environmental and social sustainability.

EAV’s goal is to continuously improve the service offered to passengers, aspiring to become a leader in intelligent transport service management.

Thanks to the funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), EAV is investing hundreds of millions of euros to replace its train fleet and drastically improve the infrastructure. However, such investments require a significant amount of time. Over the next two years, numerous new trains will be introduced, and significant enhancements will be made to stations through the Smart Station project.

The Smart Station project aims to enhance EAV’s railway stations by implementing a Regional Transport Operations Center that coordinates and controls modernized stations equipped with advanced security technologies, thereby reducing management and maintenance costs.

EAV aims to consider the journey as a service that places the interests and rights of its passengers at the forefront.

The challenge

EAV is seeking innovative digital solutions that improve the accessibility of offered services and the perceived quality by users. Through this growth process, EAV wants to encourage all potential passengers to take advantage of their travel offerings. The challenge is focused on implementing systems that enhance the passenger journey, even in inconvenient situations that will be completely resolved with the introduction of new trains.

Examples of possible solutions include:

  • Developing a traffic condition monitoring system, station congestion tracking, and public transportation service offers (particularly those offered by EAV) to encourage passengers to make “sustainable” travel choices and optimize the use of local public transportation, thereby avoiding inconveniences. These solutions should leverage not only the latest available technologies but also information provided by third parties, such as crowd data from Google, telecom operators, satellite data, etc.
  • Creating a system to access texts provided by EAV through QR codes and links throughout the journey, drawing inspiration from ATAC’s experience. This could include the possibility of building a community, organizing a literary contest, etc.
  • Providing information on the availability of sustainable mobility options (such as scooters and bicycles) at stations and the road conditions along the desired route.
  • Other innovative ideas to enhance the passenger experience in local public transportation are welcome!

Join the EAVolution challenge and help us build a more sustainable future for our planet together!
